The United Kingdom is not only a top destination for international students, but hundreds and thousands of them want to stay in the UK after study to build their careers, settle, and eventually become British citizens. You can stay in the UK after completing your studies, but only if you switch to a valid immigration route. The UK offers several legal pathways depending on your qualifications, job offer, and long-term plans.
In this article, we have discussed all possible UK visas after study, primarily on a UK Student visa.
1. Further Study
The first option may be to extend your stay by enrolling in another course or switching to a new Student Visa.
2. UK Graduate Visa
The Graduate Visa is the most common route after completing a degree.
The UK Graduate route was opened for applications on 1 July 2021, allowing international students to apply for permission to remain and work or look for work in the UK after completing their course of study on a student visa or Tier 4 (General) student visa.
You, in order to apply for the Graduate route, must have completed an eligible course (a degree at undergraduate level or above) at a UK higher education provider with a track record of compliance with the UK’s immigration requirements.
You are granted permission to stay for a maximum period of 2 years, or 3 years (for PHD students or other Doctoral students). This permission period is going to change from 1 January 2027, meaning if you apply for the Graduate Visa on or after 1 January 2027, your duration will be 18 months instead of 2 years (for Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates).
PhD / Doctoral graduates will continue to get 3 years stay under the Graduate Visa.
The UK Graduate visa falls under the points-based immigration system of the UK’s Immigration Rules. An applicant must be awarded a total of 70 points to qualify for this visa.
The Graduate route is an unsponsored route, which means you do not need a prior job offer for the visa. There is also, unlike sponsored work routes, no minimum salary requirements nor caps on numbers. You are normally able to work flexibly, switch jobs, and build your career as you wish in the UK.
3. Skilled Worker Visa (Long-Term Work Route)
The Skilled Worker visa is the main work visa for skilled people. This also offers a pathway to stay permanently in the UK.
You must have a job offer from a licensed UK sponsor, a standard minimum salary of £41,700 or the going rate for your job, whichever is higher, and your job must meet skill level requirements.
Skilled Worker visa allows you to stay in the UK for up to 5 years and leads to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years. However, the qualifying period for settlement is soon expected to rise to 10 years for most workers.
4. High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa
You may also choose to apply for a High Potential Individual visa if you graduated from a top global university (Must have a degree from an eligible university (outside the UK) in the last 5 years.
You do not need a job offer for this visa.
If approved, you can stay in the UK for 2 years or 3 years (if you have a PhD or other doctoral qualification).
You cannot extend your HPI visa. Therefore, if you want to stay further in the UK, you must switch to another visa, if eligible, before your HPI visa expires.
5. Global Talent Visa – Global Business Mobility visa
This is another UK visa after study that allows you to work in the UK if you’re a leader or potential leader in the fields of academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology.
The main benefit of this visa is that you do not need a job offer to qualify.
The visa also offers a fast-track to settlement (as little as 3–5 years)
6. Innovator Founder Visa
If you want to start a business in the UK and you have a viable and scalable business idea, you may apply for a UK Innovator Founder visa. This is a visa for early-stage entrepreneurs. It does not require any investment if either:
• Your business is already established and has been endorsed for an earlier visa; or
• You have changed your business and already agreed on it with your endorsing body
required
You may be able to apply for a settlement once you have been in the UK for 3 years.
7. Family Visa (Partner Route)
The UK Family visa (applying as a partner) is another UK visa after study on a student visa. You can stay in the UK after study if you marry or enter into a civil partnership with a British citizen or settled person in the UK.
The key requirements for this visa include proving your relationship is genuine and ongoing and meeting the financial requirement (usually a £29,000 income threshold in April 2026).
Other UK visas after study
You may also choose the following less common but possible routes:
• UK Health and Care Worker Visa
• UK Religious Worker Visa
• UK Charity Worker Visa
• UK Graduate Trainee Visa (Global Business Mobility)
Summary
There are several UK visas after study that you can look to apply for to stay and work in the UK. You can also switch to a family visa if you get married to or enter into a civil partnership with a British citizen or someone settled in the UK before your student visa expires.
Importantly, switching rules vary depending on your current visa; not all routes lead to ILR (also known as ‘settlement’).
Planning early is critical, especially if you are looking for work-based visas without leaving the UK.
