A UK visitor visa allows you to visit the UK for various purposes, such as tourism, business-related activities, short-term study, meeting family and friends, and receiving private medical treatment. The visa allows you to stay in the UK for a short period of up to 6 months. You must leave the UK at the end of your visit, or 6 months, whichever is earlier. You can only do permitted activities as a visitor in the UK, which also means that with a UK visitor visa, you cannot engage in paid or unpaid work for a company or as a self-employed person. You cannot engage in full-time remote work either.
Under the UK’s immigration law, in most cases, you cannot switch from a UK visitor visa to a work visa or any other type of visa from inside the UK. So, if you want to work in the UK, you would need to leave the UK and return to your country of origin or a country of your legal residence to apply for a work visa.
This no-switch rule exists to ensure that anyone coming to the UK applies for a visa that matches their genuine reason for coming here in the first instance. In other words, it does not provide an immigration pathway to other routes.
Can you switch from a UK visitor visa to a work visa in the UK?
Unfortunately, NO. You will have to return to your home country and apply for a work visa from there. It is not permissible to switch from a visitor visa to a work visa from within the UK. You will have to make a fresh application to get a UK Work Visa, only after you have left the UK.
Why is switching not permitted?
The UK visitor visa is designed strictly for short-term visits for tourism, visiting family or friends, and short business activities (meetings, conferences), etc. The visa does not allow you to undertake long-term work, any paid employment, or switch into other visa categories (like work routes).
What options do you have?
Even though you cannot switch from a UK visitor visa to a work visa from inside the UK, you may still be able to work in the UK. You have the following options for this.
1. Leave the UK and re-enter with the appropriate work visa
Let us say you find a job while you are in the UK as a visitor, you still cannot simply switch to a work visa from inside the UK. You must apply properly and re-enter the UK with a valid work visa.
2. Apply for a work visa from outside the UK
Even if you secure a job offer from a UK employer who is a licensed sponsor (approved by the UK Home Office), you can only apply for a Skilled Worker visa UK, Health and Care Worker visa UK, or other work visas, such as Scale-up Worker visa, Seasonal Worker visa, after leaving the UK first and then submitting your application from abroad.
What happens if you try to work on a UK visitor visa?
If you try to work in the UK on a visitor visa, this may be considered a breach of your permission, and it can lead to the cancellation of your visitor visa, future UK visa refusals, and possible bans from entering the UK because the UK Home Office takes such breaches very seriously.
What UK visas can you switch to from a visitor visa?
Generally, if you are in the UK on a visitor visa, you cannot switch to any other visa, including:
• Skilled Worker visa UK
• Health and Care Worker visa UK
• Student visa UK
• Graduate visa UK
For all of these visas, you must leave the UK and apply from your home country.
However, you may potentially switch to a UK Family visa from inside the UK in very specific and compelling situations if granted permission should an ongoing family court case (for example, child custody or protection cases), or divorce proceedings legally oblige you to stay or you have exceptional circumstances where Article 8 ECHR family life becomes important which might qualify you to remain in the country based on your family life on a 10-year route.
Summary
Switching from a UK visitor visa to a work visa inside the UK is not allowed. If you want to work in the UK, you must apply for a work visa from outside the UK because working on a visitor visa is illegal and can lead to harsh consequences.
If your goal is to work in the UK, you can use the visitor visa only for networking or attending interviews, secure a job offer, return to your home country, and apply for the correct visa.
