UK visitor visa is mostly valid for up to 6 months. You must leave the UK at the end of your visit or after 6 months, whichever comes first. The question now is whether a UK visitor visa extension is possible.

Yes, there are two ways for a UK visitor visa extension. If you are here as a visitor, you may be able to get your stay extended as long as the total time of your stay in the UK is 6 months or less. For example, if you visit the UK for tourism or short-term business activities where you have been granted permission for 3 months, you can apply to extend your stay for another 3 months.

Another way for a UK Visitor visa extension is available for limited purposes. This means that not every person on a visitor visa can apply to extend their stay for more than 6 months. For example, if you visit the UK for business activities, tourism, meeting family or friends, etc., you cannot extend your permission beyond 6 months.

However, if you want an extension of a UK visitor visa beyond 6 months, you must hold a valid visitor visa that is eligible for extension. You can only apply to extend your visa for longer than 6 months if you came to the UK:

• To receive medical treatment, and the treatment is not yet complete

• As an academic/scientist/researcher, or your accompanying partner or child who still meets the eligibility requirements

• As a graduate to do a clinical attachment (a clinical attachment is usually for overseas doctors) or dental observer post (a dental observer post is for overseas dentists)

• To sit for the PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board) test/exam, and you need to re-sit for the PLAB test

Finally, you need to demonstrate the purpose for your continued stay in the UK. This means showing that your purpose to continue to stay in the UK is the same as your original purpose, whether it is for receiving private medical treatment, doing academic activities, or sitting for the PLAB test.

You must apply for a UK visitor visa extension before your current permission expires.

Eligibility requirements for a UK visitor visa extension

Normally, you can only apply for an extension if you are in the UK for medical treatment, academic purposes, to do a clinical attachment or dental observer post, or to resit for the PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board) test.

Other visitors can apply for extension as long as their total length of stay (including the extension) does not exceed 6 months.

1. Visitor visa extension for medical reasons

Where you are applying to extend your stay as a medical visitor for receiving private medical treatment in the UK, you must also:

(a) have paid for any medical treatment already received and show that you can and will pay the further treatment costs; and

(b) Prove that your medical condition requires further treatment

2. A UK visitor visa extension as an academic (or the accompanying partner or child of such an academic)

If you originally applied as an academic/researcher/scientist to visit the UK for less than 12 months, you can apply to extend your stay in the UK so that your total time in the UK does not exceed 12 months.

You must:

(a) continue to intend to:

(i) Participate in official/formal exchange programs/arrangements with UK counterparts (including medical exchanges for doctors); or

(ii) Conduct research for your own purposes, if you are on sabbatical leave from your home university or academic institution; or

(iii) To undertake research/clinical practice/teaching as a senior doctor or dentist, as long as you are not taking a permanent teaching post; and

(b) Be well-established and highly qualified within your field of expertise

(c) Have been working in that field of expertise at an institution of higher education or an academic institution outside the UK before travelling to the UK

No provision exists for dependent family members (such as spouse, partner, or children) under the visitor visa. In most visitor visa cases, each family member must apply separately as an individual visitor.

However, the dependant of an academic visitor undertaking academic activities in the UK for more than 6 months may be allowed to accompany them as dependants during the period of the academic visit.

3. A UK visitor visa extension to resit the PLAB test

If you are applying for a UK visitor visa extension to resit the PLAB test, you must provide written confirmation of this from the GMC (General Medical Council).

4. A UK visitor visa extension as an overseas graduate to do a clinical attachment or a dental observer post

If you are applying as an overseas graduate of a dental, medical, or nursing school to take an unpaid clinical attachment or a dental observer post in the UK, you must have successfully passed the PLAB test.

You must not treat patients.

Validity period of a UK Visitor Visa extension

If the UK immigration authorities are satisfied that you continue to meet the visitor visa requirements, you may be granted permission to remain in the UK for a further 6 months in the UK.

The length of extension you will get depends on the purpose of your visit:

1. General visitors

You may extend your stay provided your total time in the UK does not exceed 6 months. For example, if you originally received permission to stay for 3 months as a tourist, you may be able to apply for another 3 months.

2. Medical visitors

If you travelled to the UK for private medical treatment, you can normally apply for an additional 6-month extension to continue your treatment.

3. Academic visitors and their dependants

Academic visitors, along with their partner or child accompanying them, may qualify for an extension as long as the overall stay in the UK does not go beyond 12 months.

4. PLAB test candidates

Standard Visitors who came to the UK to sit the PLAB examination may request an extension of up to 6 months to retake the exam if necessary.

5. After passing the PLAB test

Applicants who successfully pass the PLAB exam may be eligible to extend their stay further for activities such as clinical attachments or observer posts, provided their total stay in the UK does not exceed 18 months.

Summary

A UK visitor visa extension means you are applying for permission to stay for another 6 months in the country. Please note that not all visitors are eligible for extension. You can only apply to extend if you are in the UK for medical treatment, academic purposes, to do a clinical attachment or dental observer post, or to resit for the PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board) test.

Importantly, you must apply for a UK visitor visa extension from within the UK.
