The Global Talent route is for you if you are aged 18 or over, are in the field of science (such as biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, or environmental science), engineering (such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or aerospace engineering), humanities (such as history, philosophy, languages, archaeology, or literature), social science (such as economics, sociology, political science, or psychology), medicine (including doctors, clinical scientists, medical researchers, and healthcare innovators), digital technology (such as artificial intelligence, software development, fintech, cybersecurity, data science, or technology entrepreneurship), or arts and culture (including music, film, television, theatre, dance, fashion, architecture, visual arts, and design) and can show you have exceptional talent or exceptional promise in your field.

This route is also for your dependents. This means it allows your dependent partner and dependent children to apply to join you or stay here with you as your ‘dependants’ if they are eligible.

If the application of your partner or child is successful, their leave will usually end on the same date as yours. If parents of a child have visas expiring on different dates, the child’s visa will expire on the earlier date.

Who are the dependents of a person on a Global Talent visa?

A dependent of someone on a Global Talent visa primarily is their dependent partner and children.

A dependent partner or child is:

• your spouse (husband, wife), civil partner or unmarried partner

• your child under the age of 18 – this includes children who were born in the UK during your stay

• your child over the age of 18 if they currently hold valid permission (Leave to Enter or Leave to Remain) in the UK as your dependant

You will be required to give evidence of your relationship to your dependant.

Eligibility for Global Talent visa dependants

The first requirement applies to the person whose partner or child wants to apply as a dependent on the Global Talent route.

You must be applying for entry clearance to the UK or permission to stay here as a partner or child of a person (P) who has applied for entry clearance or permission to stay on the Global Talent route and the application has not been decided, holds entry clearance or permission to stay on this route, is settled in the UK or has become a British citizen, providing that P held permission on this route when they settled and the you either held permission as their partner or child at that time, or you are applying as the P’s child where you were born in the UK before P settled here.

When applying as a dependent partner, you must be 18 or over.

If you are applying for permission to stay, you must be in the UK at the time of your application.

If you are seeking to come to the UK as a partner or child, you must apply for and receive entry clearance as a partner or child on the Global Talent route before arriving in the UK.

When applying for entry clearance as a partner or child on this route, you must, if Appendix Tuberculosis applies, give a valid medical certificate. This certificate must confirm that you have undergone screening for active pulmonary tuberculosis and that this tuberculosis is not present in you.

Specific eligibility requirements for dependent partners

You must prove one of the following:

• You are in a marriage or civil partnership recognised in the UK

• You both have been living together in a relationship for 2 or more 2 years at the time of application

• You both have been in a relationship for 2 or more years at the time of application, but you cannot live together due to reasons such as you are studying or working in different places, or your culture does not accept this.

In case you are not living together, you will be required to show that you have an ongoing commitment to each other. You can show this by providing evidence that you:

• communicate with each other on a regular basis

• support each other financially

• care for children (if you have any together)

• spend time together as a couple, for example on trips/holiday or at events

Specific eligibility requirements for dependent child

The child applying as dependent must:

• live with the main applicant, unless they are living away from home in full-time education at boarding school or university

• not be married or in a civil partnership

The following, including but not limited to, must be provided as evidence of their address:

• a bank statement

• credit card bills

• driving licence

• NHS (National Health Service) registration document

• an official letter from the child’s college or university

Who are not eligible to apply as dependent partner or child on Global Talent route

If your partner and child are in the UK in one of the following circumstances, they cannot apply to switch to a Global Talent visa as your dependants :

• on a UK visit visa

• on a UK short-term student visa

• on a UK Parent of a Child Student visa

• on a UK seasonal worker visa

• on a UK domestic worker in a private household visa

• on an immigration bail

• they were granted permission to stay outside the immigration rules (this means that you have been allowed to remain in the UK even though you do not qualify for a visa or extension under the normal UK Immigration Rules), for example on exceptional or compassionate grounds

If your partner or child is currently in the UK on a Student visa, they can only switch to the Global Talent route as a dependent if they have either completed the course of study they were sponsored for or studied for a PhD for 24 or more months.

Summary

A partner or child can apply as a dependent on the Global Talent route. If they are applying from outside the UK along with you (you are the main applicant), each of you will have to apply separately and pay the visa fee before travelling to the UK.

If your partner or children are already in the UK and want to extend or switch their visa, they can apply to switch their visa either at the same time as you apply to extend or switch your own UK visa or at any time before their current UK visa expires, including children who have turned 18 during your stay.

They must fulfil certain eligibility requirements as dependents.
