  3. Summary

The student visa route is for international students aged 16 or over who want to study in the UK on an eligible course with an education provider that is a licensed student sponsor. An eligible course for the purpose of this visa is one that meets the requirements set by the UK Home Office and is offered by a licensed student sponsor. A licensed student sponsor is an educational institution that has been officially approved by the UK government to sponsor international students. You can also apply for a student visa to come to or stay in the UK to take up a salaried, full-time, elected position as a Student Union Sabbatical Officer.

For this visa, you must be awarded a total of 70 points, as this visa falls under the points-based system. If you fail to meet this or other requirements, your student visa application will usually be refused.

If the Home Office approves your visa application, you will be granted a period of permission to stay in the UK depending on the type and length of your course.

If you are aged 18 or over when you apply and your course is at or above degree level, you will usually be permitted to stay in the UK for up to 5 years. However, if your course of study on a student visa is below degree level, you can stay in the UK for up to 2 years.

You cannot apply for ILR or ‘settlement’ with a student visa.

This blog explains common reasons that usually lead to a student visa refusal. But first, we need to understand the general eligibility requirements for a student visa, as it helps us better understand the reasons for refusal.

General eligibility requirements for a student visa

The general eligibility requirements for a UK student visa, as set out in the Appendix Student, are the following:

  • You must be 16 or over
  • You must have an unconditional offer of a place on an eligible course from a UK education provider that holds a student sponsor licence.
  • Your education provider must issue you a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). You need the CAS reference number when applying for your student visa.
  • You must genuinely intend to study the course for which you are applying.
  • You will need to meet the maintenance requirement. This means you need to have:

• £1,529 per month up to 9 months for courses in London (the City of London and the 32 London boroughs)

• £1,171 per month up to 9 months for courses outside London

However, from 30 November 2026, the maintenance amount requirement for a student visa will be:

  • Studying in London: £1,570 per month up to a maximum of nine months
  • Studying outside London: £1,203 per month up to a maximum of nine months
  • You must normally demonstrate that you can speak, read, write, and understand English at the level required for your course, which can vary depending on the type and level of your course.

Common reasons for refusal of a student visa

There are several reasons why UKVI may refuse your student visa application. For example, you may fail to meet the genuine student and/or financial requirements. Therefore, you should check that you meet the eligibility requirements, provide the required supporting documents, and disclose all the information, especially related to having a criminal record or immigration violations.

Here are the common reasons for refusal of a student visa. These are not an exhaustive list. The exact reason for refusal depends on your circumstances and the specific requirements of the Immigration Rules.

1. Incomplete or inconsistent documents

You may easily forget to answer a visa application question or to include all the supporting information. UKVI may reject your student visa application if it finds that key information is missing or inconsistent.

To help avoid your visa refusal, you should review the answers you have provided in your application and check your supporting documents as many times as possible to find and correct any inconsistencies or missing information before submission.

2. Failure to meet the genuine student requirement

UKVI may refuse your UK Student visa application if it is not satisfied, on the balance of probabilities, that you are a genuine student. The assessment is based on the information provided in your application and, where applicable, your answers during a credibility interview.

To avoid refusal, you must be able to demonstrate that your main purpose for coming to the UK is genuine study and that your proposed course and study plans are credible and consistent with your circumstances.

3. Lack of sufficient Funds

You must prove your financial capacity (your ability to pay for your tuition fees and daily living expenses for your first year of studies) through evidence showing that you can support yourself while studying in the UK. If UKVI is not satisfied that you will be able to do so, it may refuse your visa application.

To prove your financial readiness, you should attach documentation such as your pay slips and bank statements, and include information on any scholarship or financial aid, and any family member’s employment details of the person who is financially supporting you.

4. Failure to explain academic history or study gaps

UKVI may consider your previous education, study gaps, and proposed course of study when assessing whether you are a genuine student.

To avoid refusal for these reasons, you should provide a credible explanation why there is a significant gap in education or a substantial change in academic direction.

5. Failure to prove your proficiency in the English language

Your inability to show your communication skills in English may also act as grounds for your student visa refusal. Therefore, you must show (unless exempt) that your ability in reading, writing, speaking, and listening meets the required level under the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) to prove that you will be able to understand your coursework and participate in class.

Summary

A UK Student visa application may be refused if you do not meet the relevant requirements of the Immigration Rules. Common reasons include insufficient financial evidence, failure to meet the genuine student requirement, an invalid CAS, incomplete or inconsistent information, false or misleading information, unexplained academic history or study gaps, and relevant criminality or previous immigration breaches.

To avoid refusal, you should ensure that your application is accurate, complete, and supported by appropriate evidence.
