You can apply for a UK fiancé(e) visa to enter the UK and marry your British or settled partner. If your application is successful, you will be granted permission to stay in the UK for 6 months, within which you must marry your UK partner. After marrying your UK partner, you must apply to extend your permission if you wish to live with your partner in the UK.
You must apply from outside the UK. You must fulfil all the eligibility requirements for your UK fiancé(e) visa application to be approved. You may also be able to extend your permission as a fiancé(e) in limited circumstances, such as where you could not marry within the original 6 months for a good reason.
How can I get a fiancé (e) visa?
Fiancé visa falls under the UK Family Visa route. This visa is designed for those who wish to come to the UK to marry their qualifying partner. To get this visa, you need to meet the eligibility requirements, prepare the required documents, submit your fiancé(e) visa application online, pay the application fee, and attend your biometric appointment.
Let’s expand on all these steps below.
1. Meet the eligibility requirements
Before submitting your UK fiancé(e) visa application, you must make sure that you meet the following eligibility requirements:
• Both you and your UK partner must be at least 18 years old
• Your UK-based partner must be a British or Irish citizen, hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), have settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or hold another immigration status that qualifies under the UK family visa rules
• You must provide sufficient evidence to prove that your relationship is genuine and ongoing
• You must intend to marry your UK partner within 6 months of arriving in the UK
• Any previous marriages or civil partnerships you and/or your partner were in must have permanently broken down.
• Your UK-based partner must, unless an exemption applies, meet the minimum income requirement of £29,000 per year before tax
• You must prove, unless you qualify for an exemption, that you can understand and communicate in English at a minimum of CEFR level A1
• You must show that suitable accommodation will be available for you, your partner, and other family members to live in the same house in the UK
• After the marriage, you must also intend to live together permanently in the UK.
2. Submit the required documents
When you apply for a fiancé visa, you must submit supporting evidence across the following key areas:
a. Identity and travel documents – valid passport, all previous passports, or other identity documents such as a relevant BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) or digital EUSS status share code.
b. Your partner’s immigration status documents – passport or eVisa
c. Genuine and subsisting relationship evidence – pictures taken during meetings, holidays, family gatherings, or other occasions, WhatsApp conversations, emails, text messages, call logs, tenancy agreements, utility bills, or official correspondence if you previously lived together
d. Intention to marry documents – Wedding venue bookings, correspondence with a registry office, and receipts for wedding-related expenses
e. Proof of finances – bank statements showing your partner’s income or your partner’s 6 months of payslips, counting back from the day you apply
f. English language ability documents (where applicable) – Your qualification documents (where applicable) or English language test certificate (if you are required to pass an approved English language test)
3. Submit the application
You must submit your application online from outside the UK. You should apply before travelling to the UK to marry your British or settled partner. There is no fixed timeline to apply for this visa before your wedding. However, you should submit your application well in advance to allow enough time for the Home Office to make a decision.
4. Pay the application fee
You will need to pay the fiancé visa application fee of £2,064. If you have dependent children added to your application, you will need to pay the fee of £2,064 per person.
5. Attend your biometric enrolment appointment
As part of your application, you will normally need to attend a VAC (Visa Application Centre) to provide your biometrics (your fingerprints and a digital photograph taken) and your passport or other required identity documents.
You may also have your supporting documents scanned at the VAC.
Once you have submitted the application and given your biometrics, you should get a decision within 12 weeks. If the Home Office approves your application, you will receive confirmation of your immigration permission, including instructions for accessing your eVisa.
Summary
A UK fiancé(e) visa allows you, if eligible, to travel to the UK to marry or enter a civil partnership with your qualifying partner within six months of arrival in the UK. To get a fiancé visa, you must ensure you qualify, have the required documents, complete the correct application online, pay the required fee, attend a biometric enrolment appointment, and then wait for a decision.
