The UK’s new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) scheme represents a significant shift in the way non-visa nationals will travel to the UK. ETA allows non-visa nationals to visit the UK for up to 6 months. Expected to be fully implemented by April 2025, this system is designed to enhance border security by pre-screening travelers before they enter the UK.

As of January 16, 2025, a temporary exemption has been implemented for airside transits at Heathrow and Manchester Airports. Passengers who remain in the airside area and do not go through border control are not required to obtain an ETA. However, landside transit passengers will still need an ETA.

In this article, we will discuss how to navigate the UK’s electronic travel authorization (ETA) scheme. Here’s a detailed overview of how the ETA works and what travelers need to know:

What is the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Scheme?

The ETA is a digital permission required for travelers from countries who don’t need a visa to visit the UK or who do not already have a UK immigration status. It is similar to other travel authorization schemes like the US ESTA or Canada’s eTA. While not a visa, it ensures that all travelers are pre-approved for entry to the UK, helping the UK government manage security risks more effectively.

Who Needs the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)?

From 2025, all non-visa nationals will need an ETA to enter the UK. This includes travelers from the EU, EEA, and non-EU countries like Australia, Canada, and the USA. UK and Irish citizens, however, are exempt from this requirement. The ETA for non-visa nationals will commence on 2 April 2025, with applications having opened earlier this week on 5 March 2025.

Why the Change?

The UK government has introduced the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) scheme to tighten border security as part of its comprehensive strategy and to streamline the process of screening passengers before coming to the UK. It is designed to identify individuals who can pose a safety or immigration risk and prevent them from entering the country before reaching the UK border.

How to Apply for the ETA?

You need to apply online for the ETA. You can simply use the ‘UK ETA app’ and apply for the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Scheme.

Follow the below steps to apply for the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Scheme through the ‘UK ETA app’.

  • Download the UK ETA App – You can download the app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  • Create an Account – You need to create an account with an email ID and a password. You will use this email ID and password in the future to access your ETA.
  • Check Your Eligibility – Before starting your application, confirm that you are eligible for a UK ETA based on your nationality and travel purpose.
  • Start the Application – Begin your application by entering your personal details, including your full name, nationality, and passport information.
  • Provide Your Passport Details – You need to take a clear photo of your passport’s biodata page (the page with your picture) using the app and upload it.
  • Provide Your Photo – Provide a valid photo that complies with the rules for digital photos on GOV.UK.
  • Answer Few Questions – You need to answer a set of questions regarding your travel purpose. You are not required to give your travel details.
  • Pay the ETA Fee – Pay the ETA fee, which is currently £10. The ETA fee will be £16 from 9 April 2025. You can make payments using Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
  • Submit the Application – Once all details are filled in and payment is completed, submit your application.
  • Receive Your ETA – Once your application for ETA is approved, your ETA will be electronically linked to your passport.

If you cannot use the UK ETA app, you can also apply on GOV.UK.

You must apply for an ETA before you travel to the UK. You can travel to the UK if you have applied for the ETA but have not received a decision on it.

Can You Apply in a Group?

No. Each individual has to apply separately for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) scheme. However, you can apply for other people.

Babies and children also need to get an ETA if they are traveling.  There is no refund possible after you apply.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Decision?

You can get an automatic decision within a few minutes if you apply through the UK ETA app. In cases where further review is required, you will typically receive a response within 72 hours after submitting the application. However, you should apply as early as possible to avoid delays.

There is no way to get a faster decision by applying through any other app or website.

You will receive the decision through an email confirming you have got an ETA. The ETA will be linked with the passport you uploaded.

How long is an ETA valid for?

Your ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During this period, you can make multiple trips to the UK as long as your ETA remains valid.

What to Do If Your ETA Application Is Rejected?

If your application for the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Scheme is rejected, you can apply afresh. You will be told the reason for rejection, which you can address when making a new ETA application. You cannot appeal against the refusal, and if you still wish to visit the UK, you need to apply for a visa instead.

Validity and Use

The ETA is expected to be valid for multiple entries into the UK for a period of up to 2 years or until the traveler’s passport expires, whichever comes first. Each visit will allow stays of up to 6 months for tourism, business, or transit purposes.

Key Benefits of the ETA

  • Enhanced Security – Pre-screening travelers reduces the likelihood of unwanted individuals entering the UK.
  • It is more efficient – ETA is a digital system. Hence, the screening at the border happens quickly, and it also reduces wait times for travelers.
  • It is cost-effective – as opposed to a full visa, an ETA is much more affordable and quicker to obtain.

Final Thoughts

The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Scheme has been launched for non-visa nationals to visit the UK for a short period of up to 6 months. Now, before you travel to the UK, you must apply and obtain an ETA. If you do not obtain an ETA, you may be denied boarding the flight abroad.

If your ETA application is refused, you may apply for a visa to enter the UK. ETA allows you to travel to the UK, but it does not guarantee an automatic entry. You must still pass UK border controls, where more checks may be carried out.
