- Summary

The UK Graduate Visa is a post-study visa route for international students studying in the UK. This visa allows you to remain in the UK to work, look for work, or study (only certain courses) in the UK after successfully completing an eligible course in the UK (usually a UK bachelor’s degree, a UK master’s degree, or a UK PhD or doctorate) only on a Student Visa or Tier 4 (general) student visa.
You must have completed your studies with a Home Office-approved HEP (Higher Education Provider, such as a college or university) that has a track record of compliance with the sponsor’s duties. This is an unsponsored visa route, which means you are not required to have a prior job offer or a CoS (Certificate of Sponsorship) to be eligible to apply for this visa.
A Graduate Visa will be valid for 2 years if you make an application on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months if you apply for it on or after 1 January 2027. However, the same visa will last for 3 years if you have a PhD or other doctoral qualification, regardless of when you apply.
You are not permitted to extend your stay in the UK on a Graduate Visa. However, you may be able to switch to a different UK visa before your permission on a Graduate visa ends, for example, a UK Skilled Worker visa, which also allows you to settle in the UK.
Is a UK Graduate Visa extension permitted?
No, because this is not a long-term visa. It has been designed as a one-time, temporary post-study immigration route. Therefore, you either have to leave the UK at the end of your visa or switch to another eligible route to continue to stay in the UK even after your Graduate Visa expires.
The UK Immigration Rules have no provision allowing you to extend a Graduate Visa, even if:
• you need more time to find a job;
• your employer is considering sponsoring you;
• you are between jobs; or
• you are waiting for another opportunity.
The only practical way for you to remain in the UK after your Graduate Visa expires is to submit an application to switch to another eligible visa before your current permission expires.
What are the Visa options after a Graduate Visa expires?
Even though you cannot extend a Graduate visa, you can switch to another visa from within the UK before your current permission expires. Switching to a different visa is a significant step. Therefore, you must review all available options carefully. The choice of route will depend on your personal circumstances, career goals, and your desire to settle in the UK.
Importantly, each UK visa route has its own requirements and limitations.
You should prepare early to avoid gaps in lawful status in the UK and to secure a future here after the Graduate Visa expires.
The following can be your eligible visa options after a Graduate Visa.
1. Skilled Worker visa
If you secure a job while still on a Graduate Visa that meets the Skilled Worker Visa criteria, you can apply to switch before the expiry date of your Graduate Visa. The Skilled Worker Visa also leads to settlement, as it allows you to remain in the UK for up to five years, after which you may be eligible to apply for ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain), also known as ‘settlement’.
For a Skilled Worker visa, you are required to get a valid CoS (Certificate of Sponsorship) from a Home Office- approved sponsor. This employer must have offered you an eligible job role that meets the minimum skill and salary thresholds. You must also fulfil other key requirements, including financial and English language requirements.
Your employer must hold a sponsor licence to hire you as a Skilled Worker. This makes planning between you and your employer crucial.
2. Global Business Mobility routes
GBM (Global Business Mobility routes) comprises the following 5 visa routes.
- Senior or Specialist Worker
- Graduate Trainee
- UK Expansion Worker
- Service Supplier
- Secondment Worker
These visa routes allow overseas businesses to send you (you are an employee of that overseas business) to the UK for specific business purposes, such as intra-company transfers, business expansion, contractual services, or secondments. These routes are intended for temporary assignments and do not lead directly to settlement in the UK, but can be a useful option for you if you are already employed by an international business with a UK branch.
3. Innovator Founder visa
You can apply to switch to this visa if you have an endorsed business idea that is new, innovative, viable and scalable. Your application must be backed by a Home Office-approved body, also known as an endorsing body, and you must show evidence of planning that includes creating jobs and growing into national and international markets; in other words, you will play an active role in developing the business.
This is a work route that leads to settlement after three years of continuous residence in the UK, but endorsement is highly competitive and requires you to submit a detailed business plan.
4. Global Talent Visa
You might be able to apply to switch to a Global Talent visa from within the UK if you are already here on another type of visa, including a Graduate visa. You can directly apply for the Global Talent visa if you have won an eligible prestigious prize. However, if you have not won an eligible prestigious prize, you will be required to get an endorsement first to show that you are a leader or potential leader in the field of academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology.
5. UK Family Visas
If, before your Graduate Visa expires, you get married to or enter into a civil partnership with a British citizen, or someone settled in the UK, you may be eligible to switch into a UK Family visa. You are required to give strong evidence of the relationship and meet the other requirements, such as MIR (Minimum Income Requirement), also known as the financial requirement, and English language requirements.
Family visas give you a direct path to settlement after five years of continuous residence in the UK, provided you meet the eligibility criteria.
6. Student Visa
If you want to continue your education in the UK, you can switch back from the Graduate visa to the Student visa. For this, the course you will enrol in must be a new qualifying course at an institution that is a licensed sponsor. You are also required to fulfil financial and English language requirements again, and pay visa application and tuition fees.
However, you cannot switch to a Graduate visa a second time. You instead will need to consider switching to another visa, such as a Skilled Worker Visa, if you wish to remain in the UK.
Summary
You can see that you may be able to explore various visa options after a graduate visa in the UK. The best route depends on your circumstances. For example, if you have a sponsored job offer you should apply for Skilled Worker Visa or Health and Care Worker Visa, if you want to continue studying apply for a Student Visa, if you have a British or settled partner, apply for Family Visa, if you have an innovative business idea apply for Innovator Founder Visa, if you are recognised in your field, apply for a Global Talent Visa, or if you are being transferred to the UK by an overseas employer, you can apply for a Global Business Mobility route.
Importantly, you must submit your application to switch before your Graduate Visa expires. If you apply in time, you can usually remain in the UK while your new visa application is being decided.
